Describe a conflict or struggle that one of the characters from the stories experiences due to being a Chinese immigrant in America.
Wan Li in the chaper The Last Communist Virgin struggles with fitting in, in America. Her friend Jeanne Shin wants her to "Americanize" herself by piercing her ears, getting new clothing and wearing makeup. But Wan Li did not want to follow American characterists, and this lowered her self esteem. She was very self concious about herself, but in the opinion of others she was beautiful. - Asha Sathre.
One of the struggles is Wan Li came to this country with basically nothing. This forced her to work at a job she does not like, and makes it very difficult to find a place to live. Derek Goodwin
In "House of Anything You Wish" the woman could not shake the fact that she was and would always be Chinese. I think that is the biggest struggle in that story and in all the others. The woman tried so many ways to Americanize herself but failed each time. She tried learning and then speaking English, but this doesn't help her because she will always have her Chinese accent. Anything she does will never change that fact.
In Forage, how the girl lets the men treat her how ever they want. even though she comes off that way she feels scared of the way her family would react if they were to find out. --Cory Hilbelink
Hoai Cao The old man from "The Homecoming of An Beijing Man".He came to America, and struggle with the life there(Minnesota). The weather is really cold, the food is honestly untasty for him. He didn't speak English at all. He got lost every time he went out. He was lonely with the life in America.
Wan Li had the struggle of staying in an apartment. She moves several times while in New York. Wan Li had to move out either because she didn't like her living conditions or her landlord would kick her out. This was a big struggle for Wan Li, always worrying out where she was going to stay next. -Sarah Lindwall
rinal bhakta Miss Wan Li is one of the struggeler in the united states who came from china. she struggle with her stay. she changed 8times her stay place in 9 months.
I think Wan Li struggles being a Chinese-American because she is a loner. She moved from her family and she has no support in America until she meets Genji. She moved from place to place and had horrible living conditions and awful jobs where she was not treated well. Then she met Genji and he gave her a nice place to live and she had a job she didn't mind.
A conflict that one of the characters had in the last communist virgin was when Mrs. W came here to America and she had to move 9 times in 8 months while in New York. This is a conflict for her because she had to really decide what was important to her whether she wanted to live somewhere fancy or if she could just make do with what she was given.
One struggle is that the main character Wan Li came to the U.S. with basically nothing. That would be hard for anyone to do because you have to start from scrap
wan li came to america with nothing and tried to meet expectations but she wasnt in the best living conditions so she had to find a suitible place for her to live.
I think Wan Li struggles being a Chinese-American because she wasn't just handed a free ticket here and a life all set up for here here. She came with barely any money and no place to stay and just started piling things on herself with all the work she was doing and the schooling. She came to this foreign place with no help and support and had to just make a living with the small amount of things she had. Moving 10 times in 9 months is also a very hard thing to do while trying to maintain a job and school as well.
Lela R V Miss Wan Li struggeler went she came from chine and move to the us, been a commuist virgin she was she thourgh no one will love her because of that and why living in New York she move a lot for apartment to another.
The stuggles Wan Li had was coming from China to America with nothing. worked and lived in the dirtiest of places, her body hurt so bad but she had to keep on going to survive.
Im most of the stories its seems as if the people struggled with finding their new identity . In the chapter " House of Anything You Wish " Tiger Fan loses his wife due to his Chinese roots . Tiger Fans wife and child end up moving out and try to hide from their Chinese roots and become Americanized.
I think that wan li has the hardest time. She dosen't have any money to spend and she is too poor for a lot of the appts. She has to move numerous times because for random reasons. She had to decide if she wanted to live in a classy place where it would be harder for her to get by or some run down place where she has extra spending money. She also has a job she dosent like.
