Describe an event or perspective from the stories that you think is culturally Chinese. Explain.
I think it is culturally Chinese to live in a small space with your family at a young age. In the early chapter of the book, the family lived in a small compound and shared beds. I think it is Chinese because they have so many people living in such small areas. About 60% of their population lives in the Eastern 1/3 of their country.
When Wan Li always calls Jeanne Shin by her Chinese name. No matter where you go or are in the world your Chinese name sticks. They don't want to lose that part of them. Their names mean something in their culture and by changing their names to Americanize them they lose that meaning.
In the chapter of Where the Poppies Blow, it portrays the Chinese culture by having different social classes. The Narrator is from a lower class and lives in the apartment, but her sister is friends with girls that live in New paradise. New paradise is where they have nice elegent things like flowers, amazing architexture and nice furnature. -Asha Sathre
as per asian culture i think in their culture family was important. In Asian culture elder daughter of the family has to do household work like cooking, cleaning and othre stuff. As per books early story the narrator helped her mother and grandmother with the household work. she making food, cleen the house and other stuff.
In the chapter “House of anything you wish” the characters is going through a lot of changes because his wife and son are becoming more Americanize and he is still the same old person from China. He communicate in Chinese to his son, but his son only reply back in English and that upset him because his son is becoming more like a English man. That is also one of the struggles for immigrant; my parent hates it when I speak in English to him because it’s rude for a child to reply back in English and not in my language. -Detxen Yang
In the chapter “The last communist virgin” when Peng had to go back to China and married a girl that his mother had picked for him I believe that it’s a Chinese culture. In Asian culture the parents are the one who decided your spouse, but now it’s a little different. It’s normal to marry a stranger back then and most family still want to do that, but in a generation like this no one really go through with it. -detxen yang
Hoai Cao For me, one thing that prepresents Chinese culture that when the little girl in "Crush".She didn't allow to brush her hair."My hair hung all the way to my thighs. Whenever Mother saw me brush it, she would curse loudly". Women in Chinese, they have to obey the rules. I think that is the part of Chinese cultures.
One thing that i think is cultural is that her whole family lived in a small place. I think that if anybody moved to a new country with their entire family, they would do the same
An example could possibly be how most of the Chinese people that live in New York and try to live the New York lifestyle have a hard time fitting in and being successful in their jobs or work. They often worry about a lot of things, at least that's how it was with Wan Li and other characters in that chapter. -Sarah Lindwall
I think it is cultural for chinese to stick to their names because at a young age there givin a name and there names has a meaning if they change there names to a regular name then there is no meaning to it.
An event that blew me away was when they were in that apt building and there were those explosions going off right outside of where they were living and they were all so calm through that and it just suprised me because i would have thought that it would have been a scary time for them.
Lela R V i think that all the story in the Last Communist Virgin book is about the chinese cultural bucause everything that is going on in each of the story about how the chinese people live and do thing together in their life.
There are many way that represent chinese culture throughout this book. One way is in the first story, there was many people living with her, she has to share beds with others and they lived in a compound. Another chinese culture was when chicken Yang came to town, he would fix the chicken for feathers and also he would make candies out of saliva. I dont think anyone would do that besides the chinese culture.
I agree with the story "Where the Poppies Blow" being a very Chinese cultural story, talking about the different social classes and all they nice things that upper classmen have over those of lower social classes. We do have that here in America as well, but we don't show it as much or make a big deal of it quite as much as the chinese do.
The chinese tend to live in smaller homes with a lot fo their family members. Another thing is that the whole families in every story are always very close. Derek Goodwin

ReplyDeleteI feel like in all of the stories the character seem to be scared, or that they dont 100% fit in with everyone else.

Asian cultures seem to have large families that live in small places. So either dysfuntion comes from this or family love.
